College Advising

Annapolis’ guidance office provides a variety of services to high school students to help them make a successful transition from high school to college. The staff collaborates with students to support their self-evaluation and identify their gifts, goals and interests for higher education.  Students are encouraged to make thoughtful choices during this complex and stressful process. Before a student is accepted into a college, a lot of work will have to be done and our guidance staff are committed to partnering with parents and students to help steer through the maze of college preparations.

• Strategic college planning begins in the 9th grade when the guidance staff begins a dialogue with the students about their futures. Students are encouraged to develop a vision for the end desired and the means necessary to reach that end. Students are encouraged to think about the characteristics of the college they might like to attend (i.e. large, small, liberal arts, program specialties, trade opportunities, etc.). Students are also informed of the implications and future impacts of laziness, procrastination, and lack of attention to their studies on their chances of getting into the college of their choice and encouraged to become self-conscious and self-motivated to make the most our ot their high school academic and extracurricular programs.

• Throughout their high school years, students are instructed to develop a profile and resume by keeping a diary of all sporting, musical, church, civic, scouting, and volunteer activities. In addition to their academic transcript, students can distinguish themselves by their record of community service and community involvement.

• As Sophomores, students are required to take the PSAT as part of the school’s academic testing program. At this time students are assisted in setting reasonable goals for future testing and are encouraged to begin a systematic process of SAT preparation (including taking an SAT prep class).

• Students take the SAT during the spring of their junior year and again the fall of their senior year. In the fall of the senior year, students are directed to fill out and submit all college applications before December 1st. In the spring of the senior year, students are directed to file for grants, loans, and scholarships.
